Model Resolution for Tribal Use
Ending Violence Against American Indian/Alaska Native Women and Girls
WHEREAS, we the members of ______________ of the United States, invoking the divine blessing of the Creator upon the efforts and purposes, in order to preserve ourselves and our descendants the inherent sovereign rights of our Indian nations, rights secured under Indian treaties and agreements with the United States, and all other rights and benefits to which we are entitled under the laws and Constitution of the United States to enlighten the public toward a better understanding of the Indian people, to preserve Indian cultural values, and otherwise promote the welfare of the Indian people, do hereby establish and submit the following resolution; and
WHEREAS, the ______________ (describe who they are)
WHEREAS, the health, safety, are primary goals and objectives of the ______________ and
WHEREAS, all Indigenous Native Cultures have a belief that respects and honors Native women and girls as life and care givers of nations; and
WHEREAS, the interaction between immigrants and Indigenous cultures has caused a significant disruption of this value of respect and honor of Native women and girls, resulting in a high rate of domestic violence and sexual assault toward Native women and girls; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary for the ______________ and the leadership for tribal governments to be pro-active in defense of Native women and girls to curtail and prevent violence against Native women and girls; and
WHEREAS, failure to recognize and acknowledge domestic violence and sexual assault as having a major impact on Native communities, families, women and children, and diminishes, not only Native women and girls but, also diminishes the heart and spirit of Native Nations and sovereign; and
WHEREAS, the future of indigenous nations rests in the secure status of women and girls, to live in an environment free of violence.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the ______________ establishes a task force to and commissions a preliminary report on the level of domestic violence and sexual assault in our Nations, communities and homes; and how it effects all levels of Tribal life, with recommendations for action and potential funding sources, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this preliminary report due at the ______________ session, use established agencies on domestic violence and sexual assault; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOVLED, that the ______________ use its findings to strategize actions for Tribal communities and nations.
