V-DAY CALL TO ACTION!!! CALL GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER TODAY!
ASK THAT HE SIGN SBX3 13
TO RESTORE EMERGENCY FUNDS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAMS
WHY YOUR CALL IS URGENT TO SAVE WOMEN'S LIVES: In July, Governor Schwarzenegger eliminated the California Department of Public Health's Domestic Violence Program's $20.4 million budget with a line item veto. On Wednesday, the State Senate unanimously voted for a bill that State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has introduced to restore $16.3 million for the program by taking money from the Alternative and Renewable Vehicle Fuel Technology Fund to support domestic violence shelters for one year. If passed, this bill will provide much needed funding to 94 shelters. These emergency funds are urgently needed, as six CA shelters have already closed, and in many cases shelters are being forced to combine long term with emergency shelters, and reduce staff and services. Many more shelters are in danger of closing without these funds being restored.
We need you to call on the Governor to do the right thing and sign this life-saving bill as soon as possible. These funds cannot be transferred to the domestic violence shelters without his signature, so contact him NOW!
CALL HIS OFFICE AT 916-445-2841.
IF the Governor does not sign the bill, we will call for a protest on Friday, October 23 at LA City Hall with playwright/activist Eve Ensler, V-Day activists, California anti-violence leaders, survivors and advocates to protest this grievous neglect of the safety of women and children in California! IT IS TIME TO ACT! WE WILL DEMAND THAT THESE FUNDS BE RESTORED!
