To honor the women of Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua, their families and the grassroots groups that have worked tirelessly on their behalf, V-Day and Amnesty International invite you to March on Ciudad Juárez on V-Day; Saturday, February 14, 2004.
Hundreds of young women have been abducted and murdered with impunity in the past decade in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua. V-Day and Amnesty International are joining with the women of Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua and their families to demand the end to impunity and the prevention of further violence against women.
The day will include a discussion on gender violence by Mexican feminist, Marcela Lagarde; an ecumenical remembrance of the victims and honoring of their mothers and families at the Benito Juárez Monument; lunch with music and meals provided by local vendors; a poetry reading by local students from Ciudad Juarez and El Paso; and conclude with a special V-Day benefit performance of V-Day Founder/Playwright Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” performed by Lilia Aragon, Marinitia Escobedo, Laura Flores, Monica Alicia Juarez, Ensler, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Christine Lahti, and Shiva Rose.
Following are the local and international women’s and human rights groups, political leaders, and celebrities who are traveling from all over the world to convene in Ciudad Juárez to take back the streets and show that we will wait no longer for more bodies to appear.

How to get to Juárez: Helpful travel tips
If you’re coming from most anywhere in the USA, fly into El Paso, Texas via Continental, American or Delta Airlines—these are the major carriers that go there:
Continental: 800/525 0280
Delta: 800/221 1212
American: 800/443-7300
Southwest: 800/435-9792
Once in El Paso, you can rent a car from Hertz, Dollar, National, or Avis for the ten minute ride to Juárez. (To get directions for the short ride from El Paso to Juarez, simply ask the car rental agency or the hotel you’ll be staying at in Juárez -see below for a list of hotels).
Hertz: 800/654 3131
Dollar: 800/800 4000
National: 800/468 3334
Avis: 800/331 1212
***Remember, BRING YOUR PASSPORT! You’ll have to go through border patrol on the way over—this usually does not take more than ten minutes on the way over. HOWEVER, WHEN YOUR RETURN TO THE U.S. FROM JUAREZ GIVE YOURSELF A FEW HOURS before YOUR FLIGHT DEPARTS IN EL PASO BECAUSE BORDER PATROL OFTEN TAKES A LONG TIME RETURNING TO THE STATES (we also recommend that both ways, make sure your planes arriving and departing El Paso are during the day).
***Please note, Juarez is often cold this time of year so be sure to check the weather before you pack
If you’re coming from California, sometimes, depending on flight availability, it’s easier for you to catch an Aeromexico flight that will take you directly to the airport in Juárez via Mexico City. There, you can catch a taxi to take you to your hotel (or arrange one before hand with your hotel. A list of hotels is below).
Aeromexico: 800/237-6639
Southwest: 800/435-9792

ACTION STEPS
Even if you cannot make it to Juárez (or even if you can!), there are still a few simple, powerful ways you can help stop the violence against women and girls there. Please see below:
- On October 20, 2004 the International Caravan for Justice will travel across the United States and Mexico to fight for justice for the women in Juarez and Chihuahua.
- Write to the Governor of the State of Chihuahua, Lic. Patricio Martinez. For more details on what to include in your letter and Lic. Martinez’s address, please click on the following Amnesty International link: http://web.amnesty.org/pages/mex-251103-action-eng
- Contact your local newspaper and urge it to cover V-Day’s march on Juarez; This will help make Juárez the focus of the world on February 14. Direct them to press@vday.org for additional information and interviews with march organizers, supporters, and participants.
- Write your member of congress and ask him or her to support. Resolution 466 that was intiated by Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (D-CA). Resolution 466 encourages increased United States involvement in bringing an end to the murders and abductions of women in Juárez; resolves that the House of Representativs supports multinational efforts to create a DNA database that would allow families to positively identify the remains of victims and encourages the Secretary of State to facilitate US participation in such a DNA database; recommend that the United States Ambassador to Mexico visit Juárez to meet with the families of the victims. To Contact your congress person go to www.house.gov and enter your zip code.
- International Tip Line: Anyone with information about the murders is asked to call a special toll-free line manned by the El Paso police and FBI at (800) 237-0797 or by email at tips@ci.elpaso.tx.us.
- Support the women of Juarez and women all over the world, attend a V-Day benefit in your community, http://vday.org/events. In 2004, each event will donate up to 10% of their proceeds to the women of Juarez.
- Organize a Screening of Senorita Extraviada! February 1-14
In solidarity with the V-Day March on Juárez, V-Day has joined with Women Make Movies, a multicultural, multiracial, feminist media arts organization located in New York, to offer a discount on Lourdes Portillo's extraordinary film Senorita Extraviada. This documentary is a groundbreaking investigation into the mysterious murders of the women in Juárez. Portillo relies on testimonies of the families of victims as she unravels the layers of complicity that have allowed for these brutal murders to occur. The film brings issues of violence against women to the international arena and is one of the many powerful documentaries from WMM that serve as invaluable tools in helping create a global culture that says no to violence.
WMM is keenly aware of the power of documentaries to raise awareness and compel action. It's offering V-Day groups a $200+ discount on the film and its screening rights so members can view it before the march.
Take up a collection at your next meeting and purchase Senorita Extraviada for $89 plus $6 s/h at: http://www.wmm.com/catalog/pages/c579.htm
