In 2000, V-Day continued to grow at lightning speed and was successful in spreading our mission across wide and diverse networks. That outreach included the pivotal event of a major Los Angeles production of
Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues" with a
cast that included Gillian Anderson, Melissa Etheridge, Calista Flockhart and Winona Ryder.
The monumental success and popularity of the
V-Day 1999 College Initiative inspired V-Day to sustain the momentum with the V-Day 2000 College Initiative. (Note: In 2001 the College Initiative's name was officially changed to the College Campaign.) A global element was added but the goal of the Initiative remained the same: to broadcast the
V-Day mission via an international campaign in which colleges and universities worldwide would mount productions of "The Vagina Monologues" on Valentine's Day/V-Day. The V-Day 2000 College Initiative included 150 colleges and universities across the country and around the world (more than doubling the number of schools that participated in 1999!).
The funds raised through the College Initiative events have benefited hundreds of organizations working to stop violence against women in communities around the world. And, based on feedback from the participating schools, it is estimated that the 2000 Initiative introduced V-Day — its mission and its passion — to more than 15 million people worldwide.
Most schools that have participated in the V-Day College Initiative have reported that, because of the overwhelmingly positive response they received, they could not accommodate everyone who wanted to attend their performances. If you have been fortunate enough to have participated in or attend any of the V-Day College Initiative productions to date, then you are aware of V-Day’s power to educate, unite, and empower. If you have yet been unable to attend an event, or if you found out about any of the V-Day College Initiatives too late to be involved with them, don't worry: this year's College Campaign is now underway!
So join us.
We’re also deep in preparation for V-Day 2001, when women from all over the world will gather at Madison Square Garden in New York City on February 10, 2001 to call for a global end to violence against women and to ratify the V-Day Vision to End Violence Against Women. V-Day 2001 will also include a
star-studded production of "The Vagina Monologues," workshops, and conversations amongst women dedicated to eradicating abuse.
