V-Day 2001
In 2001, the V-Day movement and "The Vagina Monologues" continued to rock the world. On February 10, 2001, two colossal events moved into Madison Square Garden: the Gathering to End Violence, facilitated by Equality Now, brought together eleven regional coordinators to discuss challenges and successful strategies to end violence against women; during the Gathering, the winners from the Stop Rape Contest were announced. Later that same evening, Eve Ensler, joined by more than seventy diverse and talented celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Calista Flockhart, Rosie Perez, Glen Close, Jane Fonda, Queen Latifah and many others, Took Back the Garden, with a sold-out rip-roarin' performance of "The Vagina Monologues." A glorious and raucous crowd laughed, cried, screamed and gasped their way through the show--a rock and rally that was witnessed by 18,000 cheering women and men and raised $2 million dollars to end violence against women. To view coverage of the 2001 events, please visit Lifetime Television, Women.com and Heroine Magazine.

During the Madison Square Garden performance, twenty young women performed a movement, text and song in response to facts they had learned about female genital mutilation. Their powerful performance, "Written from My Dreams," was the kick-off to the Youth Monologues Pilot Program, which will be a pilot program in 2002.

From Alaska Pacific University to Yale in our College Campaign, and from Akron Ohio, to Sarajevo, Bosnia, in the Worldwide Campaign, V-Day continued to stomp out violence against women and girls everywhere. The College Campaign of 2001 was wildly successful; on the heels of the 2000 College Initiative, which included 150 colleges and universities across the country, the numbers for 2001 were astounding. $620,000 was donated to local women's organizations in the respective college communities, and an incredible twenty-nine million people were exposed to "The Vagina Monologues." Kudos to the Worldwide Campaign as well; more than forty cities participated in "The Vagina Monologues" and more than $350,000 was raised to end violence against women.

And we're not done yet. We are now in preparations to triple our numbers for 2002. Click here to read more about the 2002 Stop Rape Contest, or to find out more about V-Day 2002. We will not stop until women and girls can walk the streets without fear. We will not stop until rape and mutilation is a distant memory. We will not stop Until the Violence Stops.
