V-Day 2002: Grassroots and Global
Download V-Day 2002 Recap Book (2.44 MB PDF)

2002 was a year of continued growth, as V-Day went Grassroots and Global. 800 V-Day events were held around the world, in venues as varied as the communities themselves — churches, court-houses, huge stadiums, intimate coffee houses, and even the beach.

In all there were events in 599 cities and 515 schools across 35 countries. Each of these events came to be because of the commitment and vision of one organizer who decided to stand up and make a difference in her community. These organizers are more than our partners. They are V-Day itself.

2002 was also a year of renewal and expansion of our special projects. We increased our work with Afghan Women, organizing the Afghan Women's Summit in Brussels in December, and a follow up Afghan Women's Roundtable in Kabul in March. The first V-Day Safe House was opened in Narok, Kenya. And we began our work with American Indian women, staging a V-Day in Rapid City South Dakota with Jane Fonda and Tantoo Cardinal. These projects will continue as others begin in 2003.

The greatest power of V-Day is our power to change consciousness. But we also raise a lot of hard cash to help end violence against women and girls. In 2002 V-Day and our College Campaign and Worldwide Campaign organizers raised $7,300,000 to stop the violence. Over 7 million people were exposed to the message of V-Day, and over 1,000 organizations around the world received cash donations to support their work.

V-Day will continue to grow in 2003. We will reach new communities as we expand our vision, moving from V-Day to V-World, a world free of violence against women and girls.
