NEW YORK -- (August 18, 2004) V-Day's "V is For Vote" and Rock the Vote's "Chicks Rock, Chicks Vote," in conjunction with The White House Project's "Vote, Run, Lead" and Omega Institute, announce THE event of the election season: "Vaginas Vote, Chicks Rock." On the evening of September 13th, actors, singers, dancers, thinkers and leaders will all come together at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem for a night of entertainment hand political empowerment.
Confirmed to date: Vanessa Carlton, Toni Childs, Rosario Dawson, Eve Ensler, Jane Fonda, Rha Goddess & WE GOT ISSUES, Jehmu Greene, Isabella Rossellini, Susan Sarandon (pending availability), Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Gloria Steinem, Julia Stiles, Marie Wilson, and many more. WE GOT ISSUES has been commissioned by V Day for the event and will feature young women speaking out through a performance-based dialogue on feminine power, politics, and civic transformation. The Executive Producers are V Day Founder/Playwright Eve Ensler and V-Counsel Member/Actor Jane Fonda.
"Vaginas Vote, Chicks Rock" takes place less than 2 months before the presidential election and organizers are using the power of arts and activism to motivate and inspire all women-especially young women-to raise their voices and get out the vote to end violence against women and girls.
Unmarried women are the LARGEST group of people not participating in our democracy. Sixteen million unmarried women are unregistered; more than 22 million didn1t vote in 2000.
This event is the ultimate gathering of organizers who can communicate to this target block of women non-voters. Each year, V-Day rallies millions of women towards ending violence against women; Rock The Vote registers millions to vote; Omega educates millions at its conferences - including the September 11-13 Women and Power conference; and The White House Project's "Vote, Run, Lead" inspires and trains future women leaders.
"There are thousands of V-Day activists standing up to end violence against women. The time has come to take that vagina power to the polls" said Eve Ensler, founder of V-Day and playwright of The Vagina Monologues and The Good Body. "Join us on the 13th for an evening of inspiration, imagination and amazing performances. Value your vagina -- Vote!"
"Young women have the power to decide this election, but only if they register to vote and participate in the political process by voting on Election Day, Nov. 2nd," said Jehmu Greene, president of Rock the Vote, "Chicks Rock, Chicks Vote is proud to be a partner of such a powerful event, which is designed to energize young women and inspire them to seize their role in the political system."
"With 65% of women making up the majority of undecided voters, this event is a rallying call to activists nationwide that we must do everything we can to ensure that all women make their voices heard in Election 2004 and beyond," said Marie Wilson, president of The White House Project.
Tickets are $15, $25 and $40 and can be purchased online at
ticketmaster.com, by phone (212) 307-7171 & (800) 755-4000, and at the Apollo box office, 253 West 125TH Street, NYC.
The event will close the Omega and V-Day "Women and Power: Our Time To Lead" conference which takes place Friday, September 11- Monday, September 13 at NYC's Sheraton New York Hotel. The conference is a unique gathering for women who want to redefine power and lead from core female values. In addition to Eve Ensler, other leaders will include Jane Fonda, Academy Award winning actor, social activist; Gloria Steinem, activist, author, founder of Ms. Foundation for Women; Julia Stiles, actor; Pat Mitchell, president of PBS and its first female chief executive, former president of CNN Productions and Time Inc.
