Don't Give Up
I want you to know that it's alright, and it can happen to anyone, regardless of age, race, or even community standing. I say this because I am currently a law student and my parents are fairly wealthy and all tied up in their relations with the community. Before my name comes up in an introduction, it's "did I mention she's in law school?" It's nice that they're proud, but let's get serious.

During my four-year relationship the red flags were everywhere, I just didn't see them at the time. He came from an abusive family, drank too much, started dabbling in drugs. It went from yelling and screaming to little pushes here and there, then they just got bigger and bigger until the grand finale. I was thrown down a flight of stairs and beaten for about an hour and I refused medical treatment when the police arrived. I was mortified and in complete disbelief.

I was embarrassed enough as it was. I kept telling myself that "things like this don't happen to people like me, I'm just smarter than that." Unfortunately I truly believe that it can be out of your control. We don't all see the red flags right away, but when you finally get the message, the ball is in your court and it's time to make a move.

I am sharing because I don't want other women out there to blame themselves, as I did for years. I know how hard it is to walk away and the humiliation that being a victim can cause. But I went from being a victim to a survivor and a fighter and I'm proud of that. I'm not afraid to stand up and educate the world. I'd do it all over again to have the knowledge and strength I have today. Don't give up!!!
