Attend this NYC Event: Ending Femicide in the DRC

8/28/2007

V-Day and UNICEF, in collaboration with The Culture Project present:

Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Ending Femicide in the DRC
A Conversation with Eve Ensler and Christine Schuler Deschryver,
with introduction by Pamela Shifman, Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF

Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Ending Femicide in the DRC is a one night only event to launch V-Day's newest Campaign, Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Power to the Women and Girls of Democratic Republic of Congo. This new initiative is a joint two-year campaign between V-Day and UNICEF on behalf of UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict. The campaign calls for an end to impunity for sexual violence, for measures to ensure that state armed forces and police do not perpetrate sexual violence against women and girls and for the full implementation of national laws that protect and empower women.

The campaign began on August 7th, coinciding with release of the September issue of Glamour Magazine, which features a new article by Eve on her first-hand encounters with women in eastern DRC. In less than a month, V-Day has received overwhelming support from women and men all over the world and in response to Eve's article hundreds of letters have been sent to the DRC government and over $20,000 has already been raised for local organizations working on the ground to end the violence. We hope you can join us for this evening of incredible strength and eye opening conversation to continue raising money and awareness for this issue that has for too long gone overlooked.

Urge the U.S. Senate to Help Save Women's Lives in Guatemala

Since 2001, nearly 3,000 women have been brutally murdered in Guatemala. The majority of these victims were young, poor women under the age of 40. Many were sexually assaulted and tortured before being killed. Appallingly, most of these gruesome killings have remained unresolved and unpunished. On May 1, 2007, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) introduced a Senate Resolution condemning the killings and urging the U.S. to assist Guatemala in combating this terrible tragedy. You can help us bring an end to violence against women in Guatemala by urging your Senator to co-sponsor this important resolution.
