The event will begin with a greeting from New Orleans leaders, including Carol Bebelle and Karel Sloane-Boekbinder, two founding members of the Katrina Warrior Network. A Cleansing and Blessing Ritual will then open SUPERLOVE, where we will gather and hold a vision of transformation, for the Superdome, for the people of New Orleans, for the people of the world. Dr. Johnnetta Cole, former President of Spelman College, Buddhist leader Roshi Joan Halifax, Native American tribal leader Brenda Dardar Roubichaux and Denese Shevrington of New Orleans will lead this ritual, which will end with a performance lead by New Orleans’ Rev. Lois Dejean and the Mahalia Jackson Choir.

Donna Karan isn’t just hugging curves on the people she dresses but is embracing the needs of others through her newly formed Urban Zen Foundation. After all, it’s not what we wear but that we are aware which is the mission of the Urban Zen Foundation to raise awareness and inspire change. Through the tragic death of her husband, Stephan, to cancer, Donna Karan was deeply inspired to make a difference. She will talk about her desire to change the paradigm of well-being, preserve cultures threatened by globalization and empower children.

SWIMMING UPSTREAM

Swimming Upstream will premiere on the stage on the floor of the Superdome. The original theater piece is produced by 15 local artists and singers who are partnering with the Ashé Cultural Arts Center and Eve Ensler to ensure there is an artistic record of the experiences of New Orleanians. The cast, directed by Kenny Leon, will include New Orleans’ Troi Bechet, Asali Njeri DeVan, Anne-Liese Juge Fox and Karen-kaia Livers, V-Board member and actress Kerry Washington, and playwright and actress Anna Deavere-Smith.
