2005: SAFE H({})USE – BAYAT HAWA


On July 18, Bayat Hawa, Egypt’s first safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence, opens. Created by the Association for the Development & Enhancement of Women (ADEW), the program offers comprehensive services for women and children traumatized by domestic violence, while also promoting dialogue and public awareness of violence among the media, policy-makers and community leaders.  Learn more

2005: V-DAY KARAMA


In July, V-Day launches the Karama Program in Beirut, Lebanon, under the guidance of V-Day Special Representative Hibaaq Osman. Karama, Arabic for dignity, supports a regional movement across Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Morocco, Algeria, Syria, Sudan, and Tunisia to end violence against women in the Middle East.  Led by women activists from politics, economics, health, art/culture, education, media, law, and religion,  Karama provides a way to re-build collaboration among Arab women's NGOs and to attract new allies Learn more
