‘DOING TIME’ Released for V25, the 25th Anniversary of the V-Day, the Global Activist Movement to End Violence Against Women, Gender Expansive People, Girls & the Planet

April 10, 2023 –  Right/Write to Heal: Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women in Their Own Voices, a joint project of the Columbia Center for Justice and V-Day’s Beyond Incarceration Project, in collaboration with Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) and Human Pictures has created an animated short film entitled ‘Doing Time: A Woman’s View’ about the experiences of incarcerated & formerly incarcerated women.

Doing Time features writings by the Right/Write to Heal initiative’s Jonel Beauvais, Judy Clark, Leah Faria, Selina Fulford, Latisha Morris, Harmony, Betsy Ramos, Edna Sams, Roslyn Smith, and Cheryl Wilkins.

“We believe the time is overdue for women impacted by the justice system to tell their own stories, in their own voices, about how they experienced incarceration and what it has done to their lives on the inside and after being released, acknowledging the harm we have done and the trauma we experienced on our journeys to healing.” – Right/Write to Heal Initiative

Through Right/Write to Heal, women share how they cope with the consequences of incarceration on themselves, their families and communities, with the goal of changing how people understand the impact of criminalization on women. Writing and storytelling are therapeutic interventions for people who have experienced loss and trauma, and can lead to healing, redemption, and intimacy when shared collectively and with others who have been impacted. The goal is to humanize the unique individual and collective experiences of women, particularly women of color, who from early in their lives face racism, violence, and structural barriers that lead to punishment and imprisonment.

About V25:  In 2023, V-Day, the global movement working to end violence against women, gender expansive people, girls and the planet, commemorates V25, its twenty-fifth anniversary of activism, advocacy and organizing led by survivors, artists and activists around the world. For 25 years, V-Day has worked at the intersection of arts and activism to shatter taboos, create space for women and the most marginalized, and initiate community-led culture and change. The driving forces behind V25 are new pieces of art that help center the stories and experiences of women. The very first V-Day benefit of founder V (formerly Eve Ensler)’s play The Vagina Monologues took place on February 14, 1998.

About V-Day: V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against all women (cisgender and transgender), gender expansive people, girls and the planet. V-Day believes that when art and activism come together, they have the power to transform systems and change culture.

With ingenuity and determination, V-Day activists around the world are tirelessly working to end harassment, rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex slavery.
