An Evening of Reckoning and Rising featuring V (formerly Eve Ensler), V-Day Board Members Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda, Maya Penn & Pat Mitchell; City of Joy co-Founder and Director of V-Day Congo Christine Schuler Deschryver; Joaquina Kalukango reading from Reckoning, the newest book from V, Tony Award-winning, bestselling author of The Vagina Monologues, as V-Day marks its 25th anniversary in 2023.

Proceeds will benefit City of Joy, a transformative leadership center for women survivors of gender-based violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Program is from 6:00-8:00pm. Immediately following the program, there will be a book signing with V (formerly Eve Ensler). Reckoning will be available for sale via Charis books. The author’s proceeds will benefit the City of Joy.

More about the evening: Reckoning, is the work of a lifetime — political, personal, profound, and more than forty years in the making. V invites us through a lifetime of writing, poetry, and activism, representing the methods through which she survived her own abuse and self-hatred, challenging the myths and narratives that have guided her life and the core of ideas that have become the global V-Day/One Billion Rising/City of Joy movement. In this moment of global reckoning with our past, V explores ways to create an unstoppable force for change, to love and survive love, to hold people and states accountable, to reckon with demons and honor the dead, to reclaim the body, and to see oneself as connected to a greater purpose.
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against all women, gender expansive people, girls and the Earth. For 25 years, V-Day has unleashed vast grassroots, anti-violence work on college campuses and in communities – visionary work that has been survivor-led and focused, all the while revealing the power of art and activism to change culture and systems. With ingenuity and determination, V-Day activists around the world are tirelessly working to end harassment, rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex slavery.
The City of Joy is a transformational leadership community for women survivors of violence, located in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, a region plagued by an ongoing proxy war for the area’s vast mineral resources. Since opening in 2011, 1987 women have graduated from the City of Joy, healed themselves, been nurtured, learned new skills, empowered themselves and joined into a network of love and revolution. These women have released massive trauma and horrific memories. They have danced, sung, learned their rights, performed plays, developed agricultural skills, come to love their bodies. They have become leaders in their communities. They are no longer stigmatized for being raped. City of Joy serves 90 survivors of gender violence aged 18 to 30 at a time.
