We RISE for Mother Earth, today & every day

We RISE for Mother Earth, today & every day

On Earth Day and every day we RISE for Climate Justice & Mother Earth.

We amplify the connections between the exploitation of women and the exploitation of the earth. The global climate crisis impacts communities around the world. Women and girls suffer the most in terms of long-term loss of livelihood, forced migration, human trafficking and other climate-related conflicts. The destruction of the Earth – the relentless drilling, fracking, mining, deregulation of protections, militarism and extreme violence – has wrought upon the livelihood and traditions of the people, particularly the Indigenous people.

This Earth Day, we renew our call for justice against the aggressive greed and global exploitation of nature and people that deepen the inequalities of wealth and power. We are witnessing the last gasp of patriarchy that is becoming increasingly desperate and maniacal.

We RISE for Mother Earth and for the urgent restoration of dignity, integrity and respect towards the Earth and to all people of the world who have been violated by policies and programs that cause environmental degradation and plunder. We RISE to address the devastating consequences of the vicious systems of patriarchy, imperialism, capitalism and racism in the world today and the destructive battle for power, fought on the bodies of women, gender expansive people, and the Earth.

As Earth Day begins across the world, a look back at this 2021 short film featuring One Billion Rising coordinators past and present. Rising Gardens was a global grassroots action and defiant creative call for revival, restoration and transformation, making the connection between violence against women and destruction of the Earth. This short film features activists from Austria, Bangladesh, Eswatini, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malawi, Nigeria, United States, Portugal, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, Philippines, and Zambia.

V-World Farm, A Living Classroom for the City of Joy

Photos: Carlos Schuler

V-World Farm is more than just a physical location and sustainable community. It is seen as a metaphor for transformation, empowerment, environmental responsibility and Indigenous rights. There is a deep, long-term vision that begins with the women and the farm and continues with the reintegration of women into their communities – to the very land that was the site of their violations – empowered with their own healing and skills in permaculture and agricultural business practices.

Based on 338 hectares of arable land in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, it acts as a living classroom for the women at City of Joy. City of Joy graduates interested in farming are employed at and reside in two residential houses on V-World Farm. A bounty of crops and livestock provides the food served at the City of Joy, including carrots, cassava, corn, tomatoes, soya, beans, rice, sunflower, amaranth, eggplant, leeks, pineapple, pumpkins, cabbage, honey, eggs, and milk, as well as fish, chickens, goats, cows, and pigs.
