Embracing Transformation: My Experience at the Mariandale Retreat Center

Embracing Transformation: My Experience at the Mariandale Retreat Center

From August 26th to the 31st, I had the incredible opportunity to facilitate a transformative training session at the Mariandale Retreat Center in Ossining, New York. This experience was not only a professional milestone but also a deeply personal journey, especially as I worked with 21 formerly incarcerated women—some of whom I’ve known for years and have lived alongside during my 39 years of incarceration. The combination of shared history and the serene environment created a powerful atmosphere for healing and growth.

The Mariandale Retreat Center Mariandale Dominican Sisters retreat center nestled in the picturesque Hudson Valley, is a hidden gem that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The lush greenery, tranquil gardens, and soothing sounds of nature set the stage for a transformative experience. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the peacefulness of the surroundings. It was a place designed for reflection, healing, and connection—a perfect backdrop for our wellness program.

One of the most profound experiences during my time there was walking the labyrinth. This simple yet powerful act became a metaphor for the journey we were all on. As I walked through the intricate path, I felt a deep sense of connection to both the space and the women I was there to support. The labyrinth offered a moment of quiet reflection, allowing me to release my own burdens and embrace the collective energy of healing that filled the air. It was an amazing experience that grounded me and reinforced the purpose of our gathering.

From the moment we stepped inside, the warmth and hospitality of the staff enveloped us. They understood the unique needs of our group and worked tirelessly to create an environment where everyone could feel safe and supported. It was clear that this was a sanctuary for those seeking solace and transformation.

As a facilitator, my role was to guide these incredible women through a series of workshops aimed at promoting wellness and self-empowerment. Many of the participants were familiar faces, having journeyed alongside me in various capacities over the years. This familiarity created a unique bond that allowed us to delve deeper into discussions about trauma, resilience, and hope.

One participant, in particular, touched my heart deeply. I had known her as a child, and witnessing her transformation into a loving and self-aware individual was nothing short of awe-inspiring. She blossomed throughout the workshop, sharing insights and experiences that radiated warmth and wisdom. Seeing her grow into such a compassionate being filled my heart with gratitude and joy. It was a beautiful reminder of the potential for change that exists within all of us, no matter our past.

One of the most impactful aspects of the training was the small group experience. In these intimate settings, participants had the opportunity to share challenges that were deeply personal. The atmosphere encouraged trust and vulnerability, creating a space where breakthroughs could happen. I witnessed moments of profound connection as women opened up about their struggles, fears, and dreams. It was exhilarating to see them lean into their vulnerability, supported by their peers in ways that felt both empowering and uplifting.

Some of the most memorable moments came during these small group discussions. One participant shared her story of overcoming the stigma associated with her past, and as she spoke, I could see the weight lifting off her shoulders. Another participant, who had long been silent about her struggles, found her voice and shared a deeply personal experience that resonated with everyone in the group. The tears, laughter, and shared experiences created a sense of camaraderie that was palpable.

These breakthroughs were not just emotional; they were transformative. Women began to see themselves not as victims of their pasts but as powerful agents of change. Watching them embrace their strength was exhilarating, and I felt honored to be part of their journeys.

Reflecting on my previous wellness retreats, I realized how these experiences shaped my approach as a facilitator. Each retreat taught me invaluable lessons about compassion, vulnerability, and the healing power of community. In past sessions, I’d seen participants transform through shared experiences, often finding strength in their stories. This foundation allowed me to work with everyone to create a safe and nurturing environment at Mariandale, where everyone felt encouraged to open up.

The techniques I learned from earlier retreats, such as mindfulness practices, using I statements and being present in the moment, were instrumental in guiding this group. These methods are used in our workshops, helping participants access their emotions more freely and express themselves creatively. The feedback from previous retreats reinforced the idea that emotional healing is facilitated by a multi-faceted process that involves increasing self-awareness, acknowledging and processing difficult emotions, practicing self-compassion, and utilizing support systems. This journey is unique to each individual and can be supported by both personal practices and professional therapeutic guidance.

One of the most poignant moments of the training was when participants opened up about their experiences with incarceration and the stigma that often follows. It was a powerful reminder of the societal barriers they continue to face even after serving their time. As we navigated these discussions, I felt a profound sense of responsibility to create a safe space where vulnerability was met with compassion and understanding.

Through our conversations, we explored strategies for coping with the past and embracing the future. The women shared their aspirations and dreams, and together we brainstormed actionable steps to achieve them. It was a beautiful exchange of ideas and support, reinforcing the importance of community in healing.

Facilitating this program was not just about leading; it was also a chance for my own growth. As I listened to the stories of resilience and hope, I found myself reflecting on my own journey. The training reinforced my belief in the power of second chances and the importance of supporting one another in our healing processes.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Sherrie, Daniell, Jennifer, Patty, and April for their invaluable guidance. Their support made this experience feel seamless and enriching, allowing me to focus on facilitating rather than worrying about the details.

It’s important to acknowledge that none of this would have been possible without V-Day, which provided me with the platform to delve into the lives of formerly incarcerated women. Their commitment to advocacy and empowerment has opened doors for many, including myself, allowing us to create meaningful change in our communities.

Leaving the Mariandale Retreat Center, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and a heart full of gratitude. The experience reminded me that healing is not a solitary journey; it is one best navigated together. The bonds formed during this training will last beyond the retreat, and I look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting these remarkable women as they move forward in their lives.

Reflecting on this experience, I am filled with optimism about the future. I am excited to announce that I will be facilitating the next group of these women, continuing the work we started at Mariandale. I look forward to next year, when this cohort will advance to facilitator levels as we pass the torch forward. The wellness programs for formerly incarcerated women are vital in empowering individuals and fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Facilitating the wellness group at The Mariandale Retreat Center was more than just a venue for training; it was a sanctuary for healing, growth, and transformation. The small group experiences were truly the best part of this journey, highlighting the power of connection and support. I am filled with excitement for what lies ahead, not only for myself but for the incredible women I have had the privilege to work with. Together, we will continue to break barriers and create a brighter future, one story at a time.
